THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING GARDEN
Grand Haven, MI – Gardeners love plants.
And while most agree “the more plants the merrier,” the ever shrinking yard
creates new challenges. Houses are getting larger and lots are getting
smaller, leaving gardeners less space to create a serene urban utopia. As a
result creative gardeners have turned to smaller, more compact plants to
pack more diversity and color into their gardens. A good example of this new
compact shrub is a variety of Blue Beard (Caryopteris) called Petit
Bleu™.
“People
no longer have room for a 8 foot forsythia in their yard,” says Danielle
Smith, Horticulturist at Proven Winners®. "Its petite shape fits into most
gardens,” says Smith, “and its late season display of dramatic, deep blue
flowers meets another growing need, the desire to extend the garden’s beauty
into fall. Gardeners want more than just fall mums.”
European gardeners are
accustomed to small gardens so it comes as no surprise that Petit Bleu was
developed in France. Noted plantsman and breeder Jean-Paul Devasse’s big
idea was to think small. The result was a tight, compact plant that only
reaches 2 to 2 ˝ feet tall and wide. Compared to other varieties Petit Bleu™
has loads of flower power. Its compact habit, shorter stems and the short
distance between each flower results in an intense flower display from
late-summer into fall when many other plants have lost their luster. It is
easy to grow when planted in well drained soil. For the best flower display
plant it in full sun. It is hardy from Michigan to Texas. Petit Bleu has
remarkably glossy, dark green leaves (other varieties leaves are dull grey),
and intense blue flowers. Blue flowers are a bit of a rarity in the garden
especially in late summer. Just think of the envy that it will create in any
neighborhood.
Petit Bleu is available through
many mail order companies including
