BLACK LACE A NECESSITY FOR EVERY CLOSET…AND GARDEN

Grand Haven, MI –Black Lace (Sambucus nigra ‘Eva’ pp# 15,575) can be compared to that classic little black dress that is tucked into every woman’s closet. Why does every woman have that ‘go-to’ outfit for emergencies? Because we all know that black complements any color and also works fine as a stand alone. Black Lace will do that for any garden, too. Its unique color will make your Supertunia® Petunias pop with excitement. Over its 10 years’ of breeding at the East Malling Research Center in Kent, England someone saw it had the makings of a classic.

Ken Tobutt and Jacqui Prevette, the breeders of Black Lace, were those people. They realized that Black Lace had enormous potential. Ian Hardie, Commercial Manager of East Malling, states, “This is an exceptionally beautiful variety which offers great garden performance.” He believes that Black Lace could rival the traditional Japanese Maple. “Black Lace has been on sale in large numbers at this year’s big garden shows in the UK and they have been selling out.”

The appeal of Black Lace is its unique black leaf color that sets it apart from all the plants available for purchase today. Plants with black leaves are few and far between, especially for the perennial garden. In the array of shrubs it is nearly non-existent. Not only does it portray this characteristic, but many others. Its fine texture and lacy look is comparable to that of a Japanese Maple. For the novice gardener, it would be easy to get them confused. One way that it can be distinguished is the fact that Black Lace has beautiful pink blooms in early Spring & Summer. Then in the Fall it produces dark black berries that can be used for making wine and jam or for attracting wildlife. It is also multifunctional as a stand alone accent plant, mixed in a perennial and annual border, container gardening or as a hedge. It is exceptionally hardy and will do well from Central Minnesota to North Carolina and west to California (Zones 4 to 7).

Black Lace is an incredible variety that will be a necessity in your garden just like that black dress in your closet. To obtain more information about this plant go to www.colorchoiceplants.com for cultural information and to find a list of retailers
