   American Pillar     Thuja occidentalis 'American Pillar pp# 20,209

 

A sport of ‘Hetz Wintergreen’ selected for its lightning fast growth, dense branching structure and tall, narrow habit.  It maintains this useful, desirable columnar shape with minimal pruning. 

It has tremendous potential in both the residential and commercial landscape market, and makes a fantastic specimen plant at retail.  A single leader variety with good deer resistance, it is very hardy. 

Hardiness: USDA Zone 3-8

Size: 30 to 30 feet by 3 to 5 feet wide

Foliage Color:  Rich green

Fall Color: Remains the same color

 

 

Exposure:  Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Prefers moist, well drained, fertile Soils. pH adaptable.

Pruning: Not normally necessary.

Watering: Medium moisture. Often found in the wild on moist but well drained flats, slopes, banks of rivers .

Wildlife: habitat for birds.

Type: Evergreen

Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for evergreens. Follow the label for recommended rate of application.

Uses: Hedging, screens, specimen, winter gardens, woodland gardens.

The tight pyramidal habit works nicely in many landscape designs, and its fast growth and hardiness makes it a good choice for many suburban locations, especially for creating fast-growing privacy screens.
